Long-Term Care Ombudsman Services investigate and work to resolve complaints made by, or on behalf of, individual residents in long-term care facilities such as:
  • Nursing homes
  • Residential care facilities for the elderly
  • Assisted living facilities
All Ombudsman services are provided for free and all complaints are confidential. Long-Term Care Ombudsman representatives assist with issues related to day-to-day care, health, safety, and personal preferences. Problems can include, but are not limited to:
  • Dietary concerns
  • Improper transfer or discharge of a resident
  • Inappropriate use of chemical or physical restraints
  • Medicare and Medi-Cal benefit issues
  • Medical care, therapy, and rehabilitation issues
  • Physical, verbal, mental, or financial abuse
  • Poor quality of care
  • Violation of residents' rights or dignity

The Deputy District Attorney assigned to this Unit often relies on civil prosecution to enforce laws that protect consumers, although some issues are handled criminally. These matters are prosecuted on behalf of the People of the State of California, like all other District Attorney matters.

One of the main goals of the Unit is to ensure businesses are not harming consumers in Placer County and are obeying the laws governing similar business operations here.

Some cases arise from consumer complaints made by members of the public who believe they have been harmed or treated unfairly by a business which is located in Placer County.

PDRS is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation.

PDRS is funded primarily from grants and community support.

Most fees for service are based on a sliding scale determined by gross annual household income for each party in two-party disputes with no attorney involvement.

Ask about fees for more complex or multi-party disputes or disputes with attorney involvement.

Parties can choose to enter to a written, binding agreement if they jointly agree to do so, parties may arrive at a verbal, informal agreement, or choose not to enter into an agreement.

Even when cases do not settle fully, mediation facilitates the exchange of ideas which may help the parties focus on key issues in the future.
