United Policyholders (UP) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be a trustworthy and useful information resource and an effective voice for consumers of all types of insurance in all 50 states.

UP's work is divided into three programs:
  • Roadmap to Recovery provides tools and resources for solving insurance problems after an accident, loss, illness, or other adverse event. For example, the program provides free, trustworthy help navigating the process of returning to a wildfire damaged area, repairing and replacing damaged and destroyed property, and collecting all available insurance funds. 
  • Roadmap to Preparedness promotes disaster preparedness and insurance literacy through outreach and education in partnership with civic, faith based, business, and other non-profit associations. 
  • Advocacy and Action advances pro-consumer laws and public policy related to insurance matters.

The Disaster Legal Assistance Collaborative (DLAC) is a coalition of nonprofits, legal aid organizations, government entities, and law firms in California working together to offer free legal services to the communities in the aftermath of natural disasters. Survivors of disasters such as wildfires face a wide variety of legal and financial needs ranging from insurance claim assistance to requests for government programs such as FEMA assistance.

October 2023 - Connecting Point’s Disaster Case Management Program (DCMP) can work with eligible Nevada County Residents who were impacted by the 2023 Winter Storms. The funding is from FEMA disaster declaration DR-4699-CA - California Severe Winter Storms, Straight-line Winds, Flooding, Landslides, and Mudslides - FEMA incident period February 21, 2023 - July 10, 2023.

If your primary residence was severely damaged or destroyed by the 2023 Winter Storms, you may be eligible to receive case management. Renters can also be referred if there was damage to their personal property. Having applied for FEMA already is NOT a requirement for case management services.

Please call 211 or 833-342-5211 to be referred to a Disaster Case Manager. All navigator services are free.

The Nevada County Relief Fund was established in April 2020 to mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis. The fund now serves as a single “Emergency Relief Fund” to provide relief to Nevada County residents following the official declaration of a local emergency. The Nevada County Relief Fund is under the fiscal sponsorship of the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation.
