Waste Management of Nevada County provides Christmas tree disposal options and general holiday recycling guidelines for Nevada County residents.

Information for the 2025 season will be posted on the agency’s Facebook page in mid-December.

Holiday tree disposal (2023-2024 season):

Residents were able to:

  • Cut holiday trees into small sections and place them inside green waste carts with lids fully closed
  • Drop off whole, undecorated trees at designated free disposal sites

Previous free drop-off locations included:

HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (HEAP) - PG

Project GO, Inc. provides utility bill assistance through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) for income-eligible households in Placer and Nevada counties.

The program helps reduce heating and cooling costs with a once-per-year payment toward eligible utility bills.

Services include:

  • A one-time utility payment (available once every 12 months) for gas, electric, propane, or firewood
  • Financial help for current and/or past due bills, including 48-hour shut-off notices
  • Annual assistance amount of up to $1,000, based on household income and energy burden (amount subject to change)
  • Phone-based application process followed by mailed packet with instructions for submitting documentation

Additional notes:

  • Residents of Placer and Nevada counties must apply through Project GO
  • The program serves utility customers throughout both counties, including the Truckee area
  • Only one assistance payment allowed per household, per year

If you are a residential customer who has gone without power for at least 48 hours because of severe storm conditions, you may qualify for an automatic payment under PG&E's Safety Net program. This program provides a payment of $25 - $100, which PG&E pays automatically about 60 days following the storm outage.

Following a wildfire, storm, or other disaster, residents who continue to experience outage issues or other utility concerns after contacting their utility provider should submit a complaint with the California Public Utilities Commission's online form.

Be ready to provide:

  • Name of the Utility Provider
  • Full name of the customer. If you are not the customer of record, you must be authorized to discuss the account with the utility company.
  • Account Number
  • Service Address (the physical location of the service. Is it a residence or business?).
  • Mailing Address (if different from service address).
  • Area code and phone number that pertains to the dispute.
  • A phone number where we can reach you.
  • Details of your complaint. Please be specific and provide as much information as possible such as a chronological order of dispute. For example, the dates that charges were billed, the location of the safety concern, etc.
