Nevada City’s Planning Department is administered by the City Planner. The Planning Department contracts with the County of Nevada Building Department to provide Building Department services. Start any building permit process with the City of Nevada City. It will then be referred to the County.

The Planner’s responsibilities cover both current and advanced planning activities. Current planning includes the processing of entitlement applications and local administration of the California Subdivision Map Act, California Environmental Quality Act, and state land use laws. The Nevada County Historical Society Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum preserves local transportation history and artifacts from the narrow gauge railroad era. Visitors are offered a docent-led historical tour of the museum, railyard, and restoration shop. Provides visitors an exhibition of Engine 5, an 1875 Baldwin that began service hauling lumber, then passengers and freight for the NCNGRR, and finally as a movie engine at Universal Studios in Hollywood, a collection of 90-110 year old wooden rail cars.

PSPS is a Public Safety Power Shutoff event. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) may do a PSPS when danger of wildfires is high. PSPS Care Coordination is a program to help PG&E customers who have health and medical needs that require electricity. Care Coordination helps to get a plan in place for resources that can be used during a PSPS power outage event. Callers will receive a follow up call from Connecting Point staff so they can create their plan. The care coordination call will typically take 30-45 minutes.
 
Who qualifies?
Those who have access & functional needs, and/or are electricity dependent during a power outage (examples include medical equipment or medications that rely on power, accessibility equipment that relies on power, etc).

The Connecting Point Employment Services department offers the #CaliforniansForAll Youth Jobs Corps program. The program is focused on hiring youth ages 16-30 to work with local nonprofits or government agencies in the areas of COVID-19 recovery, food insecurity, and climate action. The program is open to both English only and Spanish only speakers.

#CaliforniansForAll Youth Jobs Corps has three core goals:
1. Increase employment for underserved youth across California
2. Develop meaningful public service career pathways
3. Enhance the capacity of local governments to address challenges in the key areas of food insecurity, climate action, and COVID-19 recovery

The Children’s Community Chest Program is a discretionary emergency fund of last resort to meet the needs of children ages 0-18 in Nevada and Sierra County families for whom no other community support is available or who find themselves in a situation that requires a timely response. The eligibility area includes parts of the Tahoe-Truckee region that are in Nevada County or Sierra County. 

A variety of hardships are funded, such as: emergency rental assistance, transportation needs, utility payment to avoid shut-off, car repairs, medical related costs, counseling services, and summer camps.

This is truly a funding of last resort. Requests for Children’s Community Chest must be submitted by local public and nonprofit agencies.
