The In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program helps pay for services so that individuals can remain safely in their own homes, in contrast to care facilities.

To be eligible, you must be over 65 years of age, disabled, or blind. Disabled children are also potentially eligible for IHSS. IHSS is considered an alternative to out-of-home care, such as nursing homes or board and care facilities.

Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) provides free legal assistance to low-income people who meet eligibility requirements. Services range from referrals to representation, depending upon the client's needs, LSNC priorities, and resources available. 

LSNC serves Nevada and Placer counties. Not all services are available in both counties.

LSNC provides counsel, advice, and representation to low-income individuals and seniors involving:

  • Welfare
  • Housing
  • Social security
  • Medi-Cal/Medicare
  • Civil rights/discrimination
  • Disability rights
  • Consumer rights
  • Debt and credit issues
  • Simple estate planning
  • Elder abuse
  • Natural disaster outcomes

LSNC does NOT take divorce/family law cases, criminal, conservatorship, or small claims cases.

Phone and fax numbers are the same for both offices and are routed through Auburn. Since the Auburn office is closed on Fridays, there is no way to reach the Nevada City office by phone on Fridays even though that office location is open.

Seniors First offers Meals on Wheels and Senior Cafes.

Meals on Wheels

A service designed to help Older Adults Age in Place by targeting people who are home alone during the day and who have difficulty preparing simple meals. For clients who need the service temporarily.

Eligibility

At the time services are provided, clients shall be:

  • 60 years of age or older, sufficiently functionally impaired and homebound; or,
  • The spouse, of any age, of an eligible client; or,
  • A person with a disability (of any age) who lives with an eligible client.

Senior Cafés

The Senior Cafés program provides a hot, healthy lunch five days a week to seniors age 60 at over eight Senior Café locations throughout Placer County including Auburn, Lincoln, Rocklin and Roseville. The Senior Cafés are lively gathering places that help maintain clients' sense of community and connectedness.

Cost

Meals are provided for a small optional contribution. No one is ever turned away for lack of financial resources.

What is a Representative Payee (Rep. Payee)?

A Representative Payee is an individual or organization that the Social Security Administration (SSA) appoints to receive and manage the RSDI (Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance), SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance), or SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits of another person, also referred to as a beneficiary. Nevada County Now offers paratransit and senior on-demand dial-a-rides. There is no Sunday service. Service area includes Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, and other local areas (see link to map in Web Pages section below). Bus hours: 7am - 6pm  Monday - Friday. 7:30am - 4:30pm Saturday.

The County of Nevada Transit Services administers an origin-to-destination/door-to-door paratransit service for persons with disabilities who, due to a mental or physical disability, are unable to use the fixed-route bus system, as mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
