If you are having a life-threatening emergency call 9-1-1. For example, if you have lost power to essential life-sustaining medical devices and do not have backup power for them, or you have a medical need for temperature control.

FREED works with the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC) and PG&E to support people with disabilities and older adults during a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event or other emergencies due to power shutoffs. The goal is to enable them to remain safe while independent in their residences and communities. 

Funding for some services listed below is ONLY for PSPS events (or other power outage events for which PG&E may activate FREED). There is no funding for generators. No generators are available through any of these programs.

Code RED offers notifications to county residents in case of emergencies or other critical community situations requiring alerts. Alerts may be received by means of text, email, landline, cell phone, and TTY. CodeRED is a product of the company called OnSolve. All Nevada County residents are encouraged to sign up. Alerts are sent to evacuation zones that are affected by an incident. To find you evacuation zone number, enter address at Genasys Protect.

PSPS CARE COORDINATION - CP

PSPS is a Public Safety Power Shutoff event. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) may do a PSPS when danger of wildfires is high. PSPS Care Coordination is a program to help PG&E customers who have health and medical needs that require electricity. Care Coordination helps to get a plan in place for resources that can be used during a PSPS power outage event. Callers will receive a follow up call from Connecting Point staff so they can create their plan. The care coordination call will typically take 30-45 minutes.
 
Who qualifies?
Those who have access & functional needs, and/or are electricity dependent during a power outage (examples include medical equipment or medications that rely on power, accessibility equipment that relies on power, etc).

No Cost to Residents
The Office of Emergency Services offers no-cost sand for Nevada County residents every year between November 1st and April 30th.
Please Note: Sand is available on a first-come-first-served basis, while supplies last. Residents are advised to please bring their own sandbags and only take what is needed. 
Sandbags are available for purchase online or at various local businesses such as:
  • B&C Hardware
  • A to Z Supply
  • Hills Flat Lumber Co.
Self-service Loading
Bring a shovel and sandbags to take advantage of this no-cost service. Please only take what you plan to use for the protection of your personal property. This will enable us to continue to offer this free service.
