Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transportation (TART) provides public transportation, much of it free, for the Truckee – North Lake Tahoe region. TART connects with Greyhound, Amtrak, and Truckee Transit at the Truckee Depot. Offers ADA complementary service for individuals who cannot ride a public bus due to physical, mental, or other health issues. If a person qualifies, then they can get door to door service within the TART fixed route. TART is a public transit service operated by the Placer County Department of Public Works, funded by Placer County, Washoe County Regional Transportation Commission and the Town of Truckee.

TART has four distinct services

  • TART - Fixed route public bus service

If you are an adult with dependent children, you may be eligible for California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids, or CalWORKs. CalWORKs provides:

  • Education, employment and training programs through Employment Services

The Emergency Relief Program provides short-term assistance to help non-residents who are stranded in Nevada County return to their place of residence. Assistance is offered as a loan and may include temporary lodging, food support, transportation funding, and travel fare.

Services include:

  • Motel vouchers as short-term shelter
  • Food vouchers for basic needs
  • Gas funds for travel
  • Bus fare assistance for transportation

People must apply in person at one of the three Nevada County Department of Social Services locations:

North Lake Tahoe EXPRESS Offers daily airport shuttle service (year-round) from 6:00 AM until midnight to and from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee region with local transit connections.

The Nevada County Historical Society Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum preserves local transportation history and artifacts from the narrow gauge railroad era. Visitors are offered a docent-led historical tour of the museum, railyard, and restoration shop. Provides visitors an exhibition of Engine 5, an 1875 Baldwin that began service hauling lumber, then passengers and freight for the NCNGRR, and finally as a movie engine at Universal Studios in Hollywood, a collection of 90-110 year old wooden rail cars.
