The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County has a variety of programs designed to increase fire safety in wildfire country.

  • Access & Functional Needs (AFN) - Low-income senior residents or those with medical disabilities may qualify for assistance with defensible space clearing.
  • Defensible Space Advisory Visit (DSAV) - This program provides a one-on-one consultation at your home for comprehensive education on compliance with defensible space requirements around structures.
  • Chipping Program - The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County offers low-cost ($75/hr) chipping of brush cleared for defensible space of any permanent structure, and/or 30 feet from any roadside or driveway used for evacuation purposes.
  • Address Signs - The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County creates Reflective Safety Address Signs so Public Safety personnel can find you in an emergency.

The Senior Firewood Program provides qualified seniors a limited amount of pine/fir to supplement their other home heating sources when wood is available. Also accepts donations of wood as able.

Anyone wanting to apply to receive wood or donate wood should call to learn the current status of the program.

Wood supplies generally run out each season, and there are not always enough volunteers to accept wood donations.

Call 530-615-4541 to learn when applications open and whether donations are currently being accepted.

At times when the Senior Firewood Program is out of wood, Project Go may be able to help both Nevada & Placer County residents if they are income eligible for LIHEAP (they do not need to be seniors, just income qualified). Call 916-782-3443.

Waste Management provides a full range of residential and commercial solid waste collection services in Nevada County, including trash, organic waste, recycling, and safe disposal of home-generated sharps.

Services include:

  • Curbside trash, organic waste, and recycling pick-up
  • Environmental services
  • Dumpster rental and waste receptacles
  • Recycling services
  • Safe disposal of home-generated sharps (needles, syringes, pen needles, lancets) in approved biohazard containers
    • Sharps disposal is accepted at the McCourtney Road Transfer Station Household Hazardous Waste Facility and Rite Aid Pharmacy during regular business hours.
    • Approved biohazard containers are sold at pharmacies. It's illegal to dispose of sharps in regular trash or recycling.

This resource is eligible for electronic referral.

Meals on Wheels provides qualified home-bound seniors over the age of 60 with nutritious lunches. Must be enrolled in the Meals on Wheels program. Delivery is on Tuesdays & Thursdays (no deliveries on weekends, major holidays or when roads are unsafe to travel). Gold Country Senior Services oversees the Meals on Wheels program in Western Nevada County (Alta Sierra, Grass Valley, Lake of the Pines, Lake Wildwood, Nevada City, Penn Valley, Rough and Ready, etc).*

Meals on Wheels clients can apply to the Pet Food Pantry Program through their case worker. The purpose of the Pet Food Pantry Program is to keep seniors and their pets together by reducing pet expenses.

Gold Country Senior Services (GCSS) offers activities and classes that may include Needlework Circle, Bridge, Bingo, Nutritional and Educational Workshops, Line Dance, Tai Chi, and Gentle Yoga. See current listings here.

Gold Country Senior Services also operates a Senior Center in Grass Valley. It's located at 231 Colfax Ave in Grass Valley. Senior Center Members receive half-price access to all programs and get to help choose the programs GCSS offers each month.

Gold County Senior Services operates the Congregate Lunch Café, offering hot, freshly prepared lunches in a community setting for older adults in Western Nevada County.

Services include:

  • Hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays

Additional Information:

  • Welcomes adults age 60 and older; others may attend as guests for a fee
  • Collects a suggested voluntary contribution of $3.00 per meal for eligible participants
  • Charges a $7.00 meal fee for guests under age 60

Meals are served at Nevada City Senior Apartments, 231 Colfax Ave, Grass Valley, CA 95945. Service is unavailable on holidays or during unsafe travel conditions. First-time participants must complete an intake form.

No eligible participant is denied service due to inability to contribute.

Nevada County Now provides para-transit and senior on-demand dial-a-rides for eligible residents of Nevada County. Services are available in Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, and other local areas.

Services include:

  • Paratransit: Door-to-door service for persons with disabilities who cannot use the fixed-route bus system due to a mental or physical disability. Eligibility requires completing an ADA application and certification.
    • Same-Day On-Demand Services: Available to eligible disabled community members and seniors 65 and older.
    • Beyond ADA Service: Limited service up to 3/4 of a mile beyond the mandated ADA service area, prioritized for medical appointments. Must be ADA certified.
  • Senior On-Demand Dial-a-Ride: Available for residents aged 65 and older in Western Nevada County. Requires age verification and a completed application form. Trips are provided based on available capacity, with ADA-mandated paratransit trips taking priority.
