RRUFF Healing Heroes provides funding to support service dogs for veterans with PTSD and other invisible disabilities in the Sacramento area. This program is made possible by the generous support of our RRUFF members, local businesses, and individual donations.

Group service dog classes are held at Pet Food Express in Roseville and St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Rancho Cordova. Classes are also held on the American River College Campus in Sacramento for disabled veterans who are enrolled at the college. A new class began July 20, 2018 at Beale Air Force Base.

The One Year service dog training program matches a veteran with a service dog and then trains the two to work together. PTSD service dogs help by alerting their human to the approach of someone from behind, guiding their human to a safe place, interrupting nightmares and flashbacks, and many other tasks.

Scholarships are available as funding allows.

Applications should be done directly through 4paw2freedom.

YOUTH MENTORS - CHILD ADVOCATES OF PLACER COUNTY

CHILD ADVOCATES OF PLACER COUNTY #66426250

location_on B
  • 3715 Atherton Road, Ste. 1
    Rocklin, Placer

The Youth Mentor program assigns volunteer mentors to children who are at-risk of educational failure, and former foster youth who are transitioning into adulthood without family support. These at-risk youth are not currently involved in any court system, but are identified as being at-risk of educational failure (truancy) or of entering the juvenile justice or child welfare systems.

As with CASA volunteers, Mentors meet weekly with the youth, helping to:
  • Define and accomplish goals
  • Introduce youth to opportunties and potential life paths that they never dreamed possible
  • As important role models, Mentors strive to navigate at-risk youth and former foster youth toward positive outcomes that will help these young people transition successfully into adulthood.

CHILD ADVOCATES OF PLACER COUNTY #68810610

location_on B
  • 3715 Atherton Road, Suite 1
    Rocklin, Placer

The K9's 4 Kids program gives children who are experiencing trauma a chance to love and be loved by a trained therapy dog and experience normalcy in a stressful environment. A dog facilitates an acceptable emotional connection for youth who have a hard time connecting with others.

A therapy dog team includes a dog, a handler, and a companion volunteer – typically a CASA volunteer.

Child Advocates of Placer County's teams visit:
  • Juvenile Detention Facility (for probation youth) every Friday afternoon
  • Koinonia Emergency Placement homes (for kids who have recently been detained from their families due to abuse or neglect) every Tuesday

In order to expand the K9's 4 Kids program to transitional housing programs and other sites, Child Advocates of Placer County is looking for people who have a trained dog to join. If you are interested in participating in the K9’s 4 Kids program, follow the steps listed here: https://casaplacer.org/k9s-4-kids/
