The Nevada City Police Department, besides their patrol function and responding to calls for service, officers provide a variety of essential functions including; criminal investigations, traffic / parking enforcement, building code enforcement, ABC license compliance, evidence management, special event coordination, quality of life outreach and enforcement, coordinate / track POST required training, recruitment and retention of Reserve Officers, Interns and volunteers, and coordinate Neighborhood Watch activities.

The members of the Department strive to be responsive and sensitive to the needs of the community, and proactive in solving these concerns with a focus on providing a safe environment for all.

They also provides a full-service community policing organization. Officers are available for ride-a-longs and presentations on crime and traffic safety.

The Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program coordinates volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children who are dependents of the Nevada County Juvenile Dependency Court, helping to ensure they have a chance to live in a safe and permanent home.

People from all walks of life may apply to be CASA volunteers. Concern for children, willingness to learn about the child welfare and court systems, a commitment of 10-15 hours a month, good writing and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively are some of what’s needed to be a CASA. 

Contact the CASA program for an application packet. Application includes a personal interview and comprehensive background check. Trainings for the CASA Program are held in the spring and fall; however interested persons can apply at any time. Volunteers must have driver's license and current insurance.

The Nevada County Historical Society Searls Historical Library provides access to records of historical nature, for reference only. Books cannot be checked out but copies can be made of some items.

Offers materials on the area's history and the people and mines which contributed to the development of Nevada County. The Searls contains original documents, including ledgers, diaries, old county records, and letters. In addition, over 10,000 photographs are available for research purposes. Copies of any of the materials is available for a small fee. The Searls family of attorneys also left their early law case records, many of which are the only copies in existence.

Partners in English Langulage Learning (PiELL) provides free one-on-one tutoring of ESL to non-native speakers in Nevada County. All tutors are volunteers which PiELL trains to teach ESL. They offer a two day training session three times a year.

Lost in a Crowd?  This is how hundreds of Western Nevada County Residents with limited English language skills feel when making medical appointments, speaking to doctors and nurses, talking to their children’s teachers, filling out job applications, asking for directions, or reading labels. These hard-working and motivated people represent a growing number of adults living in the community who want to learn or improve their English speaking, understanding, reading, and writing skills.  Plus help on the following:
