Habitat for Humanity builds affordable homes in partnership with local low-income families, and also offers the Habitat Home Ownership Program, which provides an opportunity for local, low-income families to purchase an affordable home in Nevada County.

Families are chosen based on three basic eligibility criteria:

• ​Need - family income is between 30% to 80% of the median income in Nevada County.
• Ability To Pay - verify that the family does have a steady income in order to successfully pay the monthly mortgage payments.
• Willingness To Partner with Habitat - The family agrees to do 500 "sweat equity" hours helping build their home or providing another service to the organization.

The NC Habitat Homeowner selection committee carefully reviews applications, conducts interviews, and makes home visits to ensure that the families selected have the greatest need and likelihood of success as homeowners.

When open - The shelter will be open if it’s wet/raining at 37 degrees F. or below or open on the 4th night of consecutive rain. Additionally, they require two overnight hosts to open for overnight use. The shelter will open around 5 pm and close at 8 am the following morning. All shelter participants are asked to vacate the premises during the day.

Free hot meal - In addition to offering a warm, dry place to sleep, a free hot meal will be served from about 5-8pm and breakfast in the morning. Movies will be available to watch in addition to games.

Dogs - ​Dogs are permitted as long as they’re well-behaved, on leash, and with their persons at all times.

Placer Nature Center offers activities and classes in wildlife, astronomy, reptiles, gardening, art, insects, ecology, watershed, natural & cultural history and much more for people of all ages.

Programs are offered at the nature center and throughout Placer County.

Special nature focused programs offered all year for all ages - preschool, families, adults, grandparents, teens and all the in-between ages, too.

All events, classes and activities are low cost or free and a great way to spend time with family or old friends and to meet new friends. By giving people, of all ages, the opportunity to experience nature first hand, they learn about ecology, conservation and sustainable living while developing a sense of wonder, a growing imagination and problem-solving skills.
