The Nevada County Resource Conservation District has a Natural Resources Advisory Visit Program (AVP) that offers Nevada and western Sierra County landowners personalized assistance with natural resources management on their property. This program provides general guidance and information in addition to facilitating referrals to other public and private resource professionals at no cost to the landowner.

The Nevada City Residential Chipping Program provides the residents of Nevada City with a free, curb-side chipping service as a green waste disposal incentive to assist homeowners in their fire hazard reduction/defensible space efforts and to encourage the reduction of combustible material to small biodegradable chip piles. As of August 2019 the program will be continuing indefinitely.

In the event of a wildfire or other emergency situation, law enforcement and fire agencies issue evacuation warnings or evacuation orders for affected areas. These notices are issued for a ZONE with an EVACUATION STATUS.

Wildfire smoke containing fine particulate matter can cause eye and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, congestion, coughing, impaired lung function, and chest pain. When air quality is poor, the primary public health message is to stay indoors. However, not all community members have the same ability to limit smoke exposure in the buildings where they live, work, attend school, or spend time indoors. The Sierra Fund is working with local public health officials and service providers to ensure equitable access to places with cleaner air during wildfire.
