Kaiser Permanente (KP) covers non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) inside the Kaiser Permanente service area, when you cannot get to your medical appointment by car, bus, train, or taxi, due to your medical or physical condition. Non-medical transportation (NMT) may also be covered, depending on your plan.

The Kaiser Permanente (KP) Greater Sacramento service area includes Sacramento County and Placer County which are served by the Roseville, Sacramento, and South Sacramento medical centers.

Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program. This is a public health insurance program which provides needed health care services for low-income individuals including families with children, seniors, persons with disabilities, foster care, pregnant people, and low income people with specific diseases such as tuberculosis, breast cancer, or HIV/AIDS.

Medi-Cal is free or low-cost for California residents who meet eligibility requirements. Medi-Cal considers income, but there is no asset limit (bank accounts, cash, property, vehicles).

Most applicants who apply through Covered California and enroll in Medi-Cal will receive care through managed health care plans. Medi-Cal offers transportation to and from appointments for services covered by Medi-Cal. This includes transportation to medical, dental, mental health, or substance use disorder appointments, and to pick up prescriptions and medical supplies.

There are two types of transportation for appointments:

  • Nonemergency medical transportation (NEMT) is transportation by ambulance, wheelchair van, or litter van for those who cannot use public or private transportation.
  • Nonmedical transportation (NMT) is transportation by private or public vehicle for people who do not have another way to get to their appointment.

Medi-Cal recipients with Partnership HealthPlan of California (PHC) can contact PHC for transportation services. PHC is the managed care provider for both Nevada and Placer Counties.

The Foxen/JeT Airport Shuttle serves Western Nevada County with shuttle service to Sacramento Airport, Oakland Airport, and San Francisco International Airport.
