Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) provides free legal assistance to low-income people who meet eligibility requirements. Services range from referrals to representation, depending upon the client's needs, LSNC priorities, and resources available.

LSNC serves Nevada and Placer counties. Not all services are available in both counties.

LSNC provides counsel, advice, and representation to low-income individuals and seniors involving:

• Welfare
• Housing
• Social security
• Medi-Cal/Medicare
• Civil rights/discrimination
• Disability rights
• Consumer rights
• Debt and credit issues
• Elder abuse
• Natural disaster outcomes

LSNC does NOT take divorce/family law cases, criminal, conservatorship, or small claims cases.

Phone and fax numbers are the same for both offices and are routed through Auburn. Since the Auburn office is closed on Fridays, there is no way to reach the Nevada City office by phone on Fridays even though that office location is open.

The Placer County Public Defender's Office provides legal defense for those facing criminal allegations who are financially unable to retain an attorney.

The Placer County Superior Court Family Law Facilitator provides assistance and resources for individuals involved in family law cases, including divorce, child custody, and domestic violence matters.

Services include:

• Handling of cases related to divorce, paternity, domestic violence, child custody, support, and visitation
• Mediation services to help parents resolve custody and visitation disputes
• Legal assistance for selecting and completing family law forms through the Court’s Legal Help Center

Placer County District Attorney's Office

The Deputy District Attorney assigned to this Unit often relies on civil prosecution to enforce laws that protect consumers, although some issues are handled criminally. These matters are prosecuted on behalf of the People of the State of California, like all other District Attorney matters.

One of the main goals of the Unit is to ensure businesses are not harming consumers in Placer County and are obeying the laws governing similar business operations here.

Some cases arise from consumer complaints made by members of the public who believe they have been harmed or treated unfairly by a business which is located in Placer County.

Tips for Consumers:

Avoid offers that seem "too good to be true".

Avoid buying of major items, there is no "3-day Cooling Off Period" when buying cars.

Be aware of businesses who pose as official or government agencies when they are not Report ID Theft immediately to the Police or Sheriffs & contact your credit companies.…

The Victim/Witness program provides advocacy, information, and support services to victims and witnesses of crime in Placer County. Program services are free and available regardless of citizenship status. 

Eligibility requires that the crime be reported to law enforcement, that victims cooperate in the investigation and prosecution, and that victims did not contribute to the events leading to the crime.

Services include:

• Court escort and support during criminal proceedings
• Referrals for emergency assistance, including shelter, food, and clothing
• Follow-up counseling and employer intervention
• Reimbursement for mental health counseling, medical and dental expenses, wage loss, and emergency relocation costs

We offer mediation, training and conflict coaching services to those who live in, or own property or a business in Placer County.
