Coroner Services determines the cause and manner of death of those persons not in attendance of a physician. The Deputy Sheriff-Coroner initiates reports to assist the pathologist, make death notifications, and retain the property of the deceased for safekeeping until the next of kin is available. Government Code 27491 provides which cases will be investigated by the Coroner and what is required.

Autopsies are done for all accidental deaths, suicides, homicides, SIDS cases, and natural deaths where the coroner has no previous medical history. Statistical data for deaths in the County are available on the Coroner's website.
