CalFresh Benefits
The amount of CalFresh benefits depends on family size, income, and monthly expenses such as housing, utilities, and child care. The benefits will be loaded onto an Electronic Benefits Transfer card (EBT card) that looks like a regular credit card and can be used at most markets and grocery stores. The Code Compliance Division of the Nevada County Community Development Agency promotes and maintains a healthy, safe and desirable living and working environment by administering an enforcement program to correct violations of codes and ordinances enacted by the Board of Supervisors in regards to property, buildings, and structures. Enforces regulations for abandoned vehicles, building code violations, California State Housing Law, condition of existing structures that constitute a clear and present danger to the public, illegal solid waste, and zoning requirements for structures.

Processes abandoned vehicle complaints to remove abandoned vehicles from public and private property. To report an abandoned vehicle, call the Abandoned Vehicle Abatement (AVA) Hotline at 530-470-2750.

The San Juan Ridge Family Resource Center (FRC) provides families in the San Juan Ridge area with information and referrals to local resources, services, and facilities on a drop-in basis for visitors of all ages.

NOTE: The FRC does NOT have any housing resources and does NOT have any gift cards, gas cards, etc.


Services the FRC does offer include: computer, phone, fax, printer, children's play space, clothes closet, food pantry, diapers, lending and reference libraries, information, referrals, parenting support, weekly children's playgroup, summer camps, adult yoga, children's dance classes, and periodic events.   Call for more information.

Spirit Peer Empowerment Center offers support groups for people experiencing homelessness and/or mental health challenges.

Support services include:
  • Staff can administer naloxone Narcan in case of opioid overdose (naloxone is the drug, Narcan is a brand)
  • Housing Circle - assists with completing low income apartment applications, Craigslist searching, housing advocacy, and more. Call 530-274-1431 for meeting time info.
  • WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) education, an eight week course supporting individuals to succeed at the goals they set for themselves, including looking at triggers and addictions and ways to get beyond them
  • Food distribution to those in need
  • Hot showers for program participants - They offer 5 showers per day, 10am-1:30pm. It's recommended to be there a bit before they open at 10am to get one as they are first come, first served. Shower is ADA-compliant, but not roll in. Please notify in advance if needed.

Hospitality House offers a year-round, temporary, overnight emergency shelter for homeless residents of Western Nevada County who have lived in the county for 45 days or more. ID not required.

Services available to those who are staying at the shelter include:

  • Customized case management
  • Mental health counseling

Scooter's Pals offers numerous programs for dogs.

Rescue & Adoption Program — Scooter's Pals rescues dogs scheduled to die in high-kill shelters. They spay/neuter, fully vaccinate, and give any vet care needed. They also provide foster care or interim boarding, including all food and vet care, till a good-fit, adoptive family is found.

As soon as a dog is deemed ready to be adopted, they add the dog's write--up, photo(s), and foster contact info to our Adoptable listings on Petfinder.com.

Their dedicated adoption team carefully reviews the adoption applications received for each dog (applications are required). They also conduct interviews and do a home check in an effort to find the best, good-fit match for each dog and each family, too.
