About VITA
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax assistance to qualifying individuals and families who earned less than $65,000 in 2023. The coalition also helps educate the public on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). VITA is available through Placer County Health and Human Services in cooperation with IRS and United Way. Preparation assistance is available online at YourFreeTaxPrep.org or in person by IRS trained volunteers.

Since 2007, the Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills has been enforcing California‘s anti-cruelty laws that protect animals from abuse and neglect and serve the public.
The Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills offers adoption services and volunteer opportunities. They welcome anyone (18 and older) who is interested in making a difference and would like to volunteer their time.

The Placer County Library system offers a Adult Literacy Services which provides free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring for adults who wish to improve their literacy skills. This includes reading, writing, basic math, English as a second language, and GED help.

Learners come from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels. Some can't read or write at all, and some want to become more proficient. Once an initial assessment has been made, learners are matched with trained volunteer tutors. The pair meets at a time and library location that is convenient for both.

4-H is an educational program of the University of California Cooperative Extension and is made available through a partnership of county, state, and federal governments.

Emergency Rescue Calls
WellSpace Health responds to calls that involve emergency rescues, such as a suicide in progress, someone on the Foresthill Bridge, or calls patched in from California Highway Patrol or other law enforcement. We are here to help — by telephone, chat, and text.

All Other Calls
The Suicide Prevention Crisis Line receives calls from people of all ages who are feeling depressed, hopeless, alone, desperate, and sometimes considering suicide as a way to end their pain. A person does not have to be suicidal to talk with one of our counselors. Some of our callers are concerned about a friend or loved one who is suicidal. We are here to listen, understand, and offer information and resources as needed.

A Touch of Understanding’s mission is to encourage acceptance and respect for all individuals. ATOU's educational programs are designed to increase understanding of differences, thereby minimizing discrimination, bullying, and social isolation suffered by children and adults who are perceived as different for any reason, but especially those with disabilities.

ATOU's in-school workshop provides a potent, life-changing opportunity for students to meet people with disabilities and to experience for themselves what it may be like to have a disability. The workshop is broken up into two parts.
