The Environmental Health Department manages programs focused on environmental protection and some aspects of public health in Nevada County.

These programs regulate food preparation in restaurants, installation of wells and septic systems, handling hazardous materials and other topics related to consumer protection.

The Salvation Army offers a small emergency food pantry to help until individuals/families are able to make it to a normal distribution through Food Bank of Nevada County or Interfaith Food Ministries.

The Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Program provides pregnant parents and families with young children free home visits that are tailored to the families' specific needs.

Nurses can meet families in the comfort of their own home or by phone to provide:

The Nevada County Diaper Project Program provides diapers to young, low-income families who struggle to provide diapers for their babies. Distributes diapers throughout Nevada County at various locations.

Conducts frequent diaper drives and fundraisers to help keep the supply of diapers sufficient to meet the output of several hundred diapers per week.

This is a Ready to Grow (R2G) resource. Ready to Grow is a First 5 Nevada County program to connect children 0-5 with services and information that support their well-being. Organizations with programs that have this R2G tag may have additional programs of interest to families.

Chapa-De provides Pregnancy Care at both Auburn and Grass Valley Health Centers.

In addition to regular appointments with your doctor, their Baby Luv Program helps women get the education and services needed for a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby.

Chapa-De's services include:

• Check-ups at Chapa-De once a month or more until your 34th week, where you would then start having weekly appointments at Chapa-De with OBGYNs from Camelia Women’s Health who can deliver your baby at Mercy San Juan Medical Center
• Tests to check your health and the health of your baby
• Classes and one-on-one information about pregnancy, child birth, baby care, and breastfeeding
• Referral to community agencies that can provide additional help and services
• Information about where to go for financial help, health insurance like Medi-Cal, or food programs like WIC or local food banks
• Help with cutting down or quitting smoking, drinking, or using drugs

FREED works with the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC) and PG&E to support people with disabilities and older adults during a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event or other emergencies due to power shutoffs. The goal is to enable them to remain safe while independent in their residences and communities.

Funding for some services listed below is ONLY for PSPS events (or other power outage events for which PG&E may activate FREED). There is no funding for generators. No generators are available through any of these programs.
