Always call 8-1-1 before you dig. After you call, Underground Service Alert will contact PG&E and other companies that have underground lines in your area. Representatives will then mark the location of their underground lines so you can avoid them and dig safely. Whether you are planting a tree or a garden, or digging holes for fence posts, call 8-1-1 at least two business days before you plan to start your project.

A Touch of Understanding’s mission is to encourage acceptance and respect for all individuals. ATOU's educational programs are designed to increase understanding of differences, thereby minimizing discrimination, bullying, and social isolation suffered by children and adults who are perceived as different for any reason, but especially those with disabilities.

ATOU's in-school workshop provides a potent, life-changing opportunity for students to meet people with disabilities and to experience for themselves what it may be like to have a disability. The workshop is broken up into two parts.

  • Part 1: Speakers with disabilities talk about their life, their challenges, and how they achieve their goals. During the hour and a half session, students are encouraged to interact with these volunteers and ask questions.

The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County Access and Functional Needs (AFN) Defensible Space Program is designed to help low-income seniors and/or disabled citizens create a defensible space surrounding their residence (such as brush clearing and weed abatement). This program is for people who do not have the physical or financial ability to create their own defensible space. Age or disability and income verification must be submitted to determine eligibility. Both property owners, and renters with property owner's permission, may be eligible.

There are hundreds of applicants and wait times for this service can be 1-2 years, but people are encouraged to submit applications at any time.
