The Sierra Roots Weather Shelter in Nevada City is a program that is activated during extreme hot or cold weather events for one of the most vulnerable populations, the chronically homeless people in our community. Each time a weather event triggers the need to open, enough volunteers are needed also. NOTE: Sierra Roots does not provide motel vouchers or gas cards.

Sierra Roots warming shelter can accommodate up to 30 guests. First come, first served.

When the shelter is open
The North San Juan Warming Shelter will be open on nights 37 degrees F. (formerly 34) and below or on the 3rd consecutive night of rain. The forecast model we follow is NOAA.gov with zip code 95960.

The shelter will open around 5pm and serve dinner until 7pm on the front porch.

There are patio heaters to create cozy safe space on the porch. Only overnight guests are permitted in the building and masks are required 100% of the time while in the building - that includes overnight.

Breakfast is served in the morning on the way out of the shelter and close doors at 8am.

Open seasonally November 1st-April 30th, 6 pm to 8 am.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the Emergency Warming Center will continue to stay open on weather-triggered nights for up to 14 guests.

WEATHER TRIGGERS FOR THE EWC TO OPEN:
  • A temperature of 15 degrees F. for 4 hours overnight or windchill of 15 degrees or less for a period of 4 hours overnight
  • One foot or more of snow is predicted overnight
  • Other severe or extreme weather condition/s as forecasted by the National Weather Service such as heavy rain or winds
  • and sufficient staff and/or volunteer coverage

The Emergency Day Respite Center provides:
  • Warm meals
  • Showers
  • Laundry
  • Case Management
  • Access to counseling, community, and basic necessities
  • Longer-term support when possible
