California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) facilitates California's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program.

Temporary Financial Assistance

CalWORKs is a temporary financial assistance program for low- or no- income families with children. It can help all kinds of families who have fallen on hard times due to a variety of issues such as fleeing domestic violence, illness or death of an income earner, substance use, child behavior or developmental challenges, homelessness, legal or criminal record constraints, or job loss.

Employment Services

CalWORKs financial assistance is available to children regardless of whether their parents choose to participate in Employment Services. If you participate in Employment Services, you may be eligible to receive CalWORKs cash assistance for yourself, in addition to support with expenses related to your job or education. Vouchers for reduced fees for California ID cards are available for people receiving Nevada County welfare assistance programs (veterans, eligibility & employment, Adult Services or Child Welfare assistance programs).

Go to one of the three Nevada County Department of Social Services offices and ask for a voucher. A county worker must sign the voucher. People who are homeless and on public assistance are eligible to receive a free ID card. This does not replace drivers licenses, only identification cards.

The San Juan Ridge PARTNERS Family Resource Center (FRC) provides families in the San Juan Ridge area with information and referrals to local resources, services, and facilities on a drop-in basis for visitors of all ages.

It also assists families with child development, parenting support, counseling, education, and employment tools. It also offers playgroups for families with children ages 0-5, and weekly activities for older children.

Note:

  • The FRC does not have any housing resources and does NOT have any gift cards, gas cards, etc.
  • The FRC does offer a computer, phone, fax, printer, children's play space, clothes closet, food pantry, diapers, lending and reference libraries, information, referrals, parenting support, weekly children's playgroup, summer camps, adult yoga, children's dance classes, and periodic events.

The San Juan Ridge Family Resource Center has laundry vouchers and bus passes free to clients upon request.
