Placer Independent Resource Services (PIRS) offers free services that support independent living for people with disabilities in Placer, El Dorado, and Alpine counties.

Services include:

  • Coordination of assistive technology, including computer access aids
  • Peer support and independent living skills training
  • Personal assistant referrals
  • Application assistance for SSI, SSDI, Medi-Cal, CalFresh, IHSS, and housing-related forms

Placer Independent Resource Services (PIRS) facilitates peer-led Cross Disability Support Groups for people with any disability in Auburn (weekly), Placerville (monthly), and a Spanish-speaking group (biweekly). 

Groups provide connection, peer support, and resources.

Services include:

  • Weekly peer support group in Auburn
  • Monthly peer support group in Placerville
  • Spanish-speaking peer support group
  • Information, referrals, and reasonable accommodations upon advance request

Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) provides free legal assistance to low-income people who meet eligibility requirements. Services range from referrals to representation, depending upon the client's needs, LSNC priorities, and resources available.

LSNC serves Nevada and Placer counties. Not all services are available in both counties.

LSNC provides counsel, advice, and representation to low-income individuals and seniors involving:

  • Welfare
  • Housing
  • Social security
  • Medi-Cal/Medicare
  • Civil rights/discrimination
  • Disability rights
  • Consumer rights
  • Debt and credit issues
  • Elder abuse
  • Natural disaster outcomes

Phone and fax numbers are the same for both offices and are routed through Auburn. Since the Auburn office is closed on Fridays, there is no way to reach the Nevada City office by phone on Fridays even though that office location is open.

This service is available from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays. No service is provided on Sundays or holidays. Please call for more information.

Alta California Regional Center (ACRC) provides lifelong support for individuals with developmental disabilities in Nevada and Placer counties.

Services include:

  • Early intervention for children ages 0-3 with or at risk for developmental delays

  • Case management and service coordination

  • Life skills and activity center programs focused on creativity, communication, and independence

To qualify, individuals must have a substantial developmental disability such as intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and/or autism, with onset before age 18.
