The Nevada County Law Library provides open access of these resources to all members of the community.

  • The Nevada County Law Library is affiliated with the Nevada County Superior Court. It is not affiliated with the Nevada County Libraries.
  • The Law Library collection contains approximately 6,000 volumes of reference materials, including: Nolo Press self-help law books, the Nevada County Codes, California Code, State Supreme and Appellate court reports, and the Municipal Codes of Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Truckee.
  • The Self-Help Center is located adjacent to the Law Library. It provides legal information on court procedures, form packets with instructions, and alternatives to civil litigation, such as mediation. Areas of law include: Adoption, Guardianship, Name Change, Unlawful Detainer (Eviction), Civil Harassment, Modification of Probation, and Traffic. Sierra Roots provides weekly meals and clothing to people who are homeless. Clothing, including socks and shoes, is available every week. Individuals can get clothing once every two weeks.

During winter months, lunch served on Thursdays at 11:30am at the First Community Church at 300 Main Street, Nevada City.

During summer months, Thursday lunches are served at 11:30am at Pioneer Park, 421 Nimrod Street in Nevada City in the picnic area near the horseshoe pits.

The Sierra Roots Weather Shelter provides emergency shelter and warm clothing for adults experiencing chronic homelessness in Nevada City during periods of extreme cold or heat.

The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis and can accommodate up to 30 adults. Services are activated only when weather thresholds and volunteer availability are met.

Activation criteria include:

  • Three consecutive hours at 32°F or below
  • 32°F or below with snow on the ground
  • Sustained wet weather with low rebound temperatures
  • Availability of sufficient volunteers

Clothing distribution:

Warm clothing and gear are provided during winter events. 

Items may include:

  • Coats
  • Rain gear
  • Sturdy boots

Pets:

Pets are allowed with the following conditions:

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times
  • Animals must remain under owner control

What's Up? Wellness Checkups provides mental health screenings for suicide risk, depression, and anxiety to 9th grade students and any grade student upon request. Screenings are voluntary and confidential, with followup support provided for treatment connections.
