The Nevada City Planning Department contracts with the County of Nevada Building Department to provide Building Department services. Start any building permit process with the City of Nevada City. It will then be referred to the County.
Planning responsibilities include the maintenance of the the City’s General Plan and coordination with regional planning agencies and the state to ensure consistency with the laws that govern land use, development, subdivision, and environmental quality.

The Nevada County Law Library ​provides open access of these resources to all members of the community.

• The Nevada County Law Library is affiliated with the Nevada County Superior Court. It is not affiliated with the Nevada County Libraries.
• The Law Library collection contains approximately 6,000 volumes of reference materials, including: Nolo Press self-help law books, the Nevada County Codes, California Code, State Supreme and Appellate court reports, and the Municipal Codes of Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Truckee.
  
• The Self-Help Center is located adjacent to the Law Library. It provides legal information on court procedures, form packets with instructions, and alternatives to civil litigation, such as mediation. Sierra Roots provides weekly meals and clothing to people who are homeless. Clothing, including socks and shoes, is available every week. Individuals can get clothing once every two weeks.

During winter months, lunch served on Thursdays at 11:30am at the First Community Church at 300 Main Street, Nevada City.

During summer months, Thursday lunches are served at 11:30am at Pioneer Park, 421 Nimrod Street in Nevada City in the picnic area near the horseshoe pits.
