Nevada City’s Planning Department is administered by the City Planner. The Planning Department contracts with the County of Nevada Building Department to provide Building Department services. Start any building permit process with the City of Nevada City. It will then be referred to the County.

The Planner’s responsibilities cover both current and advanced planning activities. Current planning includes the processing of entitlement applications and local administration of the California Subdivision Map Act, California Environmental Quality Act, and state land use laws. Upon receipt of a complete application, the Planning Division will route the project plans and materials to appropriate City Agencies (Police, Public Works, City Engineer, Building Division), Local Agencies (Fire Department, County Transportation Commission, School District), and  regional, state or federal agencies for their review and comment.

The Nevada City Police Department, besides their patrol function and responding to calls for service, officers provide a variety of essential functions including; criminal investigations, traffic / parking enforcement, building code enforcement, ABC license compliance, evidence management, special event coordination, quality of life outreach and enforcement, coordinate / track POST required training, recruitment and retention of Reserve Officers, Interns and volunteers, and coordinate Neighborhood Watch activities.

The members of the Department strive to be responsive and sensitive to the needs of the community, and proactive in solving these concerns with a focus on providing a safe environment for all.

They also provides a full-service community policing organization. Officers are available for ride-a-longs and presentations on crime and traffic safety.

The City of Nevada City Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the City’s infrastructure and ensuring storm drains, water and sewer systems, street signs and lights, sidewalks and more are always operable and in good condition. Public Works is dedicated to keeping city streets and parks clean and safe. They also manage the maintenance of the City’s fleet of vehicles and various building facilities.

The Nevada County Law Library is the primary depository of legal reference materials for the County of Nevada, and provides open access of these resources to all members of the community.

Located in Nevada City on the first floor of the Nevada County Courthouse, the Law Library collection contains approximately 6,000 volumes of reference materials, including: Nolo Press self-help law books, the Nevada County Codes, California Code, State Supreme and Appellate court reports, and the Municipal Codes of Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Truckee.


The Self-Help Center is located adjacent to the Law Library. This award-winning self-help center provides legal information on court procedures, form packets with instructions, and alternatives to civil litigation, such as mediation. Sierra Roots offers weekly meals and clothing to people who are homeless. Clothing, including socks and shoes, is available every week. Individuals can get clothing once every two weeks.

During winter months, lunch served on Thursdays at 11:30am at the First Community Church at 300 Main Street, Nevada City. 

During summer months, Thursday lunches are served at 11:30am at Pioneer Park, 421 Nimrod Street in Nevada City in the picnic area near the horseshoe pits.

The Conflict Resolution Center of Nevada County provides neutral, third person conflict resolution and mediation services for free in the Nevada County Courts, and on a sliding scale basis for private citizens and businesses in our offices. CRC also offers group facilitation of conflict in the community, and mediation training.
