The Sutter County Sheriff Coroner Investigation is responsible for determining the cause and manner of death. Additionally, every patrol deputy is trained as a Deputy Coroner. Patrol deputies usually initiate the coroner’s investigation and the Detective Division's investigation personnel complete and finalize it.

Services:

• Investigates deaths that are sudden, violent, unusual, or unattended.
• Determines cause and manner of death through autopsy, toxicology, and forensic analysis.
• Identifies deceased individuals and notifies next of kin.
• Handles property of the deceased when no family is available.
• Coordinates with funeral homes for body transport and release (county uses contracted mortuaries).
• Issues official records: death certificates, autopsy reports, toxicology results.
• Provides public guidance on end-of-life planning and legal requirements.
• Works closely with law enforcement and health agencies for investigations and reporting.
