https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/Pfizer-COVID-19-Vaccine-Boosters.aspx
The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 booster vaccine is recommended six months or later following the primary vaccination series for certain individuals, outlined below.
WHO
People previously vaccinated with Pfizer BioNTech who SHOULD receive a booster include:People who MAY CONSIDER receiving a booster based on their individual benefits and risks include:
  • Age 18 through 49 years with underlying medical conditions; and
  • Age 18 through 64 who are at increased risk of exposure to COVID-19 due to their occupation or institutional setting.
The CDC will soon release more specific definitions for underlying medical conditions and high-risk occupational or institutional settings.
WHAT
COVID-19 Booster doses are meant to boost immunity that may have waned overtime and are the same dose of vaccine that were given as part of the primary series. Those that should receive a booster dose are at highest risk of hospitalization or death and need to be prioritized for booster doses.
WHEN
Booster doses can be received at least six months after completion of the initial vaccine series. California is ready to administer boosters to those that are recommended for boosters immediately.
WHERE
Boosters are available through all current channels, including healthcare providers, clinics and neighborhood pharmacies. Californians can visit MyTurn.ca.gov or call 833-422-4255 to make an appointment or find a nearby vaccine clinic.
WHY
All COVID-19 vaccines continue to provide significant protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. However, certain populations are seeing a slight decrease in vaccine effectiveness against infection. Booster doses of vaccines are very common. They are part of most childhood and adult vaccine series to ensure a person maintains optimal immunity against infection from a disease.

ADDITIONAL DOSES OF COVID-19-VACCINE info as of 8/18/21
There are two types of additional shots: third doses and booster shots. This information applies only to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Additional shots of the Johnson & Johnson are under consideration but there is no information at this time.
  • Third doses of the vaccine have been approved by the FDA and CDC for very specific populations that are particularly vulnerable. This group of people is outlined on the state’s website. See link below. If someone belongs to one of these groups, they need to contact their primary care physician, since getting the third dose will require approval from their doctor. https://covid19.ca.gov/vaccines/#Booster-shots-and-additional-doses
  • Booster shots are not available yet. More details on the booster shots and the potential timeline are available via the CDC statement. See link below which includes: “[The CDC is] prepared to offer booster shots for all Americans beginning the week of September 20 [2021] and starting 8 months after an individual’s second dose.” More info is expected in the coming weeks. https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/s0818-covid-19-booster-shots.html
