To stay at Volunteers of America Family Shelter, a referral through the Coordinated Entry system is required. To receive a referral, call the Placer County Homeless Resource Helpline at 833-375-2237 (833-3PLACER).

Volunteers of America Family Shelter, Home Start Inc. is a non-profit shelter (operating 24/7, 365 days a year) for homeless families in Placer County.

Services include:
  • Intensive Case Management Services
  • Housing advocacy
  • Housing placement services
  • Individual units – so rather than a nomadic shelter, each family will have their own unit
  • Food (as needed)
  • Support
  • Live in-person support – after hours
  • Life skills groups
  • Ready to rent certified training
  • Extensive housing placement services

Intakes
  • Mon-Fri
  • Intakes no later than noon
  • Emergency cases – intakes after noon
  • No walk-ins

Animals
Only service animals are allowed. Owners must present relevant documents prior to the animal being allowed on property. Documents include a service animal training certificate, shot records, and license.

Families
Age qualifications for members of a family household (any one of these qualifiers meet inclusion criteria to stay at the family shelter):
  • Children not yet born if pregnancy has reached 3rd Trimester (i.e., week 28 or month 7 of pregnancy)
  • Minor child
  • Children under age 25 if in school full-time
  • Dependent (SSDI Adult)
    • Adult dependents are eligible if they can include verification of disability and are dependent upon their parent(s). Adult dependents on SSDI are eligible when the parent is the payee and care provider.

Donations
During COVID-19: Only new items are accepted for donations, due to the pandemic. Donations can include:
  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Hygiene products
  • Twin/full sheets and comforters
